Weekend K-dramas Battle as Kim Soo-hyun & Kim Ji-won Left, The Winner is…?

As Kim Soo-hyun & Kim Ji-won’s “Queen of Tears” concluded, interest is paid to the next weekend K-drama to take the throne.

On April 28, the tvN weekend drama “Queen of Tears” concluded its 16-episode journey. The final episode achieved an impressive 24.9% viewership, recording a peak of 27.3%, securing the top spot in tvN’s all-time ratings with a remarkable 21.7%, surpassing “Crash Landing on You”, which recorded a peak viewership of 21.7%.

With the end of the drama that was enjoying a syndrome-like popularity, attention is now focused on which weekend K-drama that will follow in “Queen of Tears” footsteps.

Currently, MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “Chief Detective 1958” and KBS 2TV’s “Beauty and Mr. Romantic” are highly expected to follow in the footsteps of “Queen of Tears”.

“Chief Detective 1958”, which is a prequel to the historic detective K-drama “Chief Inspector”, revolves around Park Young-han (played by Lee Je-hoon), a detective who was assigned to Seoul in 1958.

Chief Detective 1958

Set against the backdrop of the era of barbarism, “Chief Detective 1958” depicts the dynamic story of detective Park Young-han and his unique team of colleagues as they band together to break down the unreasonable norms of corrupt power and transform into detectives for the people. As of the moment, the series recorded a peak viewership rating of 10.8% and is currently enjoying huge popularity.

In the past, MBC’s Friday-Saturday dramas, such as “My Dearest”, “The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract”, and “Knight Flower”, boast significant viewership. With the end of “Queen of Tears” possibly leading to a rise in ratings of other K-dramas, attention is now turning to which weekend drama will rise to the throne.

The weekend drama “Beauty and Mr. Romantic” is also currently airing with popularity. Starring Lim Soo-hyang and Ji Hyun-woo, the drama depicts the roller-coaster romance and growth of a rookie drama PD who suddenly falls to the bottom and the top actor who loves her and helps her rise again overnight.

It achieved a peak viewership rating of 17.6%, and the latest episode also recorded 15.2%, maintaining its course.

Missing Crown Prince-the escape ofthe seven

At the same time, MBN’s “Missing Crown Prince” and SBS’s “The Escape of the Seven” Season 2 are also attracting viewers’ attention, as they could potentially ride the wave of rising ratings.

Particularly, “Missing Crown Prince” is a romantic comedy drama set in the Joseon era, where the crown prince is kidnapped by the woman destined to be his wife. As EXO’s Suho’s first historical drama, it has achieved a viewership rating of up to 2.8%. It has aired up to 6 episodes, so there is a chance for a rebound.

Meanwhile, “The Escape of the Seven” Season 2 is a work by “Penthouse” writer Kim Soon-ok, which is ending this month. Depicting the fierce and intense collaboration of seven individuals, the drama started with a 4.4% rating but recently hit 2.1%. In the latest episode, however, viewership rose to 3.5%, so there’s still a chance for resurrection.

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon-graduation

Above all, the most anticipated work is tvN’s “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon” (also known as “Graduation”), the successor to “Queen of Tears”. Starring Jung Ryeo-won and Wi Ha-joon, this K-drama depicts the exciting yet sweet midnight romance between star lecturer Seo Hye-jin and the cheeky student Lee Joon-ho who appears as a novice lecturer. The series’ first broadcast will be on May 11 at 9:20 PM (KST).
