Korea Communications Commission receives complaints regarding “The Escape of the Seven” after 2 episodes

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) received 8 complaints regarding SBS’ new Friday-Saturday drama “The Escape of the Seven” (written by Kim Soon Ok, directed by Joo Dong Min)

According to the KCC on Sep 19th, a total of 8 complaints were filed regarding the content of the first and second episodes of “The Escape of the Seven“, which aired on Sep 15th and 17th, respectively. However, the specific details of the complaints have not been disclosed. The KCC will review the complaints and determine whether any further action is necessary.

“The Escape of the Seven” depicts the story of seven people involved in the case of a missing girl, who face huge events intertwined with many lies and desires. It is a Picaresque drama, with villains as the protagonists.

This drama brought together writer Kim Soon Ok and director Joo Dong Min of SBS’ “Penthouse”, generating buzz even before its airing.

However, from the first episode, viewers criticized the explicit portrayal of scenes, such as a scene where Geum Ra Hee (Hwang Jung Eum) physically assaults her high school student daughter Bang Da Mi (Jung Ra El), and another scene where high school student Han Mo Ne (Lee Yu Bi) engages in “having sex with minors”, leading to childbirth at school.

In the second episode, a scene showing Geum Ra Hee strangling Bang Da Mi and engaging in violence was broadcast without any filtering. Some questioned whether this content is suitable for audiences under 15.

After the broadcast, the viewer bulletin board was filled with criticisms, such as “No matter how free creative expression is, this is going too far“, “This crossed the line“, “How can they handle such provocative material on terrestrial television?“, “I felt extremely uncomfortable while watching” and “Is it all about ratings?
