“Big Mouth” Yoona gained the recognition as a real actress with her own effort

Now she can be called a content guarantee check. Yoona is walking on a solid road not only as a singer but also as an actress.

MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “Big Mouth” (played by Kim Ha-ram, directed by Oh Choong-hwan) depicts the story of a lawyer with a 10% winning rate, who got caught up in a murder case which got people mistaken him as the famous conman “Big Mouse”, digging into the hidden truth of the privileged class, which is stained with huge conspiracies, to survive and protect his family.

“Big Mouth” was a highly-anticipated work even before it started as it is Lee Jong-seok’s return after four years since tvN’s “Romance is a Bonus Book” in 2019. Yoona’s appearance drew even more attention to the drama. In addition, MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama hasn’t received any notable result after “The Red Sleeve,” which ended with a 17% rating. In particular, in the case of “Big Mouth”’s previous work, “Doctor Lawyer” had a rather disappointing performance with a 5~6% viewer rating at the beginning of the series. Of course, the ratings rose after words spreaded, but it still ended up with just a slight rise to 7%. As much as it is, “Big Mouse” is already successful even though it is still in the early stages of the story. The first episode, which aired on July 29th, recorded a 6.2% viewer rating, signaling a safe start. It has been on a steady rise as the story continues, reaching the verge of 10% (provided by Nielsen Korea).

Alongside the fast development and unique stories, each character has their own distinct characteristic as well. Yoona’s role here is remarkable. Yoona plays Ko Mi-ho in the drama. Ko Mi-ho is a nurse who struggles to save her husband Park Chang-ho (Lee Jong-seok), who is falsely accused of being a genius con artist. She is solving the case in a refreshing way, satisfying the viewers. Earlier, Yoona said in the production presentation, “I didn’t have to worry as my husband was Lee Jong-seok. It was a pity that we had less time together because there was a physical distance between us. I was surprised by Lee Jong-seok’s delicate acting.” As such, the two do not have many scenes to act as a couple, but they still proceed with the case with sufficient chemistry.

Yoona’s acting hit began shortly after her acting debut. She played the role of Jang Sae-byeok on KBS 1TV’s “You Are My Destiny” in 2008. As it is a daily drama of KBS 1TV, Yoona made her name as “Saebyeok” among the audience in their 40s and 50s. Yoona, who had been called “Sae-byeok” for a while, stabilizes and grows her acting by playing the leading role in many dramas such as “Prime Minister and I,” “The King In Love,” “The K2” and “Hush.”

The titles that allowed her to stand on her own as an actress without the title “Acting Idol” are the films “Cooperation” and “Exit.” In “Cooperation”, her screentime was short, but she received applause for her amazing performance. In the movie “Exit,” she showed pleasant chemistry with Jo Jung-seok, drawing 9.42 million viewers to the cinema. At the time of the release of “Exit,” the movie boasted a great impact enough to make the entire Korea go “Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta” with the cast.

As such, Yoona, who is slowly expanding her acting spectrum, is also creating a new side of ther through “Big Mouth.” Noir, thriller and the role of a nurse are completely unrelated words, which might make the viewers feel awkward, but Yoona has naturally digested it in her own way. Everyone is looking forward to the future of actress Yoona, who doesn’t know how to give up.
