The new film "The Roundup: Punishment" starring Ma Dong-seok, Kim Mu-yeol, Park Ji-hwan, Lee Dong-hwi and Lee Joo-bin, is gaining momentum, surpassing even Hollywood blockbuster "Challengers" starring Zendaya
Released on April 24th, “Challengers” follows a professional tennis champion (Mike Faist) who plots a comeback with the help of his wife (Zendaya), a former tennis prodigy who retired after an injury, as he goes up against another player (Josh O’Connor), who also happens to be his former best friend and wife’s former lover. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, known for “Call Me by Your Name”, “Challengers” is his latest work released after 2 years.
With “The Roundup: Punishment” successfully competing against a Hollywood blockbuster, the question arises whether it can surpass the 10-million-viewer mark.
“The Roundup: Punishment” starring Ma Dong-seok ranked first in global box office profit for the opening weekend.
Based on Comscore’s tally on April 30th, the investment and distribution company ABO Entertainment said, “‘The Roundup: Punishment’ (directed by Heo Myung-haeng, produced by Bigpunch Pictures, etc.) ranked first in global box office profit for the opening weekend with a revenue of $24.36 million (₩33.6 billion) in just six countries.”
This surpasses Zendaya’s “Challengers”, which earned $24.01 million (₩33.1 billion) in 53 countries during the same period, as well as the creature movie “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”, which earned $22.1 million (₩30.5 billion) in 79 countries.
“Challengers” was pre-sold in 164 countries worldwide ahead of its release, setting a record for the highest pre-sale in the series and indicating global interest in the film.
On its opening day, April 24th, “The Roundup: Punishment” attracted 820,000 viewers, setting a record for the highest opening among this year’s releases. By its fifth day, it had attracted 4.2 million viewers, surpassing the breakeven point of 3.5 million viewers and recouping its production costs.
“The Roundup: Punishment” depicts an upgraded crime crackdown operation led by the monster detective Ma Seok-do and his cybercrime investigation team formed to apprehend the largest illegal online gambling organization in Korea. It is the fourth installment in the “The Roundup” series, which began in 2017.
The film features Ma Dong-seok, Kim Mu-yeol, Park Ji-hwan, Lee Dong-hwi and Lee Joo-bin among others.
