SBS’s Show Criticized For Holding A Game That Remind Viewers Of The Itaewon Tragedy

On February 10, Korean media outlet Newsen posted an article criticizing “Kick a Goal: GOALympic,” the SBS’ Lunar New Year special that aired on Feb. 9, particularly the “timer group photo shoot” segment. More than 70 players and coaches were divided into two teams and they had to push each other into a narrow square frame to take pictures. The team with the most faces in the picture won the game. The team members had to do spin 5 times at the starting line, run toward the target point, and push the opposing team to the outside in the process. The camera caught short cuts of players stumbling and pushing each other, causing laughter. Some of them were trying their best not to be pushed out of the photo zone by holding onto their support, and others were seen barely holding onto a wooden frame to the ground.

This game is said to remind some viewers of the terrible Itaewon accident. “Kick a Goal: GOAL” followed the format of MBC’s “The Idol Star Athletics Championships,” which was abolished due to various problems such as the risk of injury. Newsen believes SBS should be more careful when planning a show.

Meanwhile, the “Timer Group Photo” game first appeared during last year’s Lunar New Year, when “Kick a Goal: GOAL” was launched.
