JTBC’s drama “Doctor Cha” is being strongly criticized by patients with Crohn’s disease and their families.

Episode 7 of “Doctor Cha”, which aired on May 6th, showed the character played by Kim Hyun Mok being hospitalized as a patient with Crohn’s disease (a chronic inflammation that can occur throughout the digestive system, from the mouth to the anus).

On the broadcast, family members complained to the patient, who was about to undergo an anus restoration surgery, saying “How can you hide such a disease all this time?”, “I heard this disease can be hereditary”, and so on. In the end, the patient jumped from the rooftop after becoming pessimistic due to the harsh remarks.

Right after the broadcast, protests from patients suffering from Crohn’s disease and their families poured out on the online bulletin board of “Doctor Cha”.

Demanding an apology from the production team, they commented, “Crohn’s disease is not hereditary”, “My child went to school after revealing the fact about this disease to his friends. Do you know how nervous he was when he went to school after watching today’s episode?”, “I hope they apologize”, “Please cancel the rerun and make a proper apology immediately. Otherwise, I’ll complain to the broadcasting station”, etc.

Meanwhile, “Doctor Cha” tells the story of Cha Jung Sook (Uhm Jung Hwa), a housewife who starts living a new life as a first-year medical resident in her late 40s, and her husband Seo In Ho (Kim Byung Chul). Episode 8, which was released on the 7th, gained huge attention as it recorded a nationwide rating of 16.2% and 16.9% in Seoul area.
