From Kim Ji-won to Byun Woo-seok, Actors with Idol-Worthy Popularity Syndrome

Recently, it was announced that actress Kim Ji-won, who achieved a record-breaking viewer rating of 24.9% with tvN’s “Queen of Tears,” will hold her first solo fan meeting in 14 years since her debut.

According to her agency, Kim Ji-won will hold her first-ever fan meeting in Seoul on June 22nd. However, rather than cheering, fans expressed discontent when the date and venue were revealed.

This was because the venue for Kim Ji-won’s fan meeting is a small live hall that can accommodate only about 400 fans. Fans criticized, saying, “Isn’t it too small for her first fan meeting?” and “Considering she’s been in the industry for 14 years, the lack of demand research seems evident.” Some even suggested changing to a larger venue or holding additional sessions.

Actor Kim Soo-hyun is also embarking on a fan meeting tour. Kim Soo-hyun will hold “2024 KIM SOO HYUN ASIA TOUR in JAPAN ‘EYES ON YOU'” on June 22nd and 23rd, the same dates as Kim Ji-won’s event.

Kim Soo-hyun’s fan meeting holds significant meaning as well. Previously, after the conclusion of “My Love from the Star” in 2014, Kim Soo-hyun met fans in various countries and cities including Seoul, Taiwan, China, Japan, Singapore, and Thailand. This will be his first meeting with fans in 10 years, so fans are highly anticipating it.

The venue in Japan, where Kim Soo-hyun’s fan meeting will take place, is known to accommodate about 12,000 people. Considering Kim Soo-hyun met over 50,000 fans in 7 countries and 9 cities across Asia 10 years ago, it’s estimated that this fan meeting tour will be held not only in Japan but also in various Asian countries in the future.

Actor Byun Woo-seok, who is currently gaining popularity through tvN’s drama “Lovely Runner,” is also receiving warm attention. Byun Woo-seok, who plays the role of Ryu Sun-jae, the vocalist of the idol band Eclipse in the drama, is proving his popularity by being called Sun-jae instead of his real name among fans.

In fact, at the opening ceremony of 25th Jeonju International Film Festival on May 1st, fans shouted “Sun-jae!” to Byun Woo-seok. There was even an incident where the venue had to be changed due to his overwhelming popularity.

On May 4th, Byun Woo-seok participated in the Jeonju International Film Festival’s event. The organizers anticipated a large turnout from Byun Woo-seok’s fans and had already changed the venue once. However, they had to hastily change the ticket distribution, venue, time, and operation method again due to confusion, with fans lining up overnight to see him up close.

It’s no exaggeration to call it a ‘syndrome’ of actors’ unprecedented popularity. Staying up all night to wait for artists, fiercely competing for tickets, attending events through intense ticketing, and meeting fans through fan meetings used to be a common fan culture among K-pop idol fans, but now it’s expanding to actors as well.
