Once every year, when Halloween ends and the Christmas season comes, Mariah Carey and her hit song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” will make their “comeback” on music charts all over the world, including Korea. However, this year, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was finally surpassed by a K-pop song this Christmas and it is still topping the Melon chart even after the holiday.
“The First Snow” climbed back on charts after 10 years and won a music show trophy
Released in 2013, “The First Snow” is one of the most famous winter songs by EXO. However, it finally went beyond the fandom after 10 years and became the most famous Christmas song in Korea. A few weeks before Christmas Day, “The First Snow” began to rise on domestic music charts. On the evening of December 19th, it finally hit No.1 on Melon TOP100.
Later, the song also topped the Daily Chart. Within the past 10 years, EXO is among the rare boy groups who achieved this in Korea, aside from BIGBANG and BTS. “The First Snow” became viral on social media, and was played in all coffee shops and places where people hung out during the Christmas season.
After Christmas, “The First Snow” gave back the Melon No.1 spot to LE SSERAFIM’s “Perfect Night” but continued to stay firmly in charts and even won No.1 on the weekly music show “Music Bank” on December 29th.
“The First Snow” trend and dance challenge videos with millions of views
One of the factors that helped “The First Snow” go viral was its dance challenge. When it began to snow in Korea, many people, including celebrities and famous idols such as SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, TXT, (G)I-DLE, etc., filmed dance challenge videos under the snow. These videos even gained huge attention and recorded higher views than their comeback promotion content.
What’s interesting is that EXO, the original singer of the song, didn’t even expect this song to become so viral after 10 years. Receiving so many fans’ requests for dance challenge videos, EXO members finally joined “The First Snow” trend. As such, many people expect this song to become an iconic K-pop song for Christmas and help EXO become “Mariah Carey of Korea”.
