“Sunyang is Samsung?” The reason Korean viewers are so into “Reborn Rich”

Here are the similarities between Sunyang Group in JTBC’s drama “Reborn Rich” and the Korean conglomerate Samsung.

JTBC’s “Reborn Rich” is considered the most popular topic among netizens at the end of this year. Reaching a rating of 24.9% before it ends with two more episodes, the drama is receiving favorable reviews with its unique fantasy “reborn” material, the story recalling actual events in history, and the amazing performances of the cast.

In fact, many people say that “Reborn Rich” succeeded because it covers the events and background of the Korean business world so well.

The Youngest Son of a Conglomerate

Sunyang Group’s founding background and core affiliates, the background to portray the character Jin Do Joon (Song Joong Ki), is said to resemble the history and structure of Samsung, the No.1 business company in Korea. In addition, the image of Sunyang’s Chairman Jin Yang Chul (Lee Sung Min), including his Gyeongsangdo dialect and horn-rimmed glasses, resembles that of the late founder of Samsung – Lee Byung Chul.

In addition, the episode about sushi in episode 2 where Jin Yang Chul shows his appearance as a “sushi god” is also reminiscent of an anecdote that Samsung’s Chairman Lee Byung Chul shared with Shilla Hotel’s chef.

Real events in modern history, such as the “The dot-com bubble burst in the late 1990s”, “the Korea-Japan World Cup in 2002”, “Samsung and Hyundai’s Acquisition of Kia Motors”, and the September 11 Terror”, etc., appeared in the drama one after another, drawing sympathy from viewers. It is known that the sales of the book “Hoamjajeon”, which deals with the life story of Lee Byung Chul, are rising after its publication 9 years ago thanks to the popularity of the drama.

The large setting of Sunyang in “Reborn Rich” is similar to that of Samsung, but individual cases also resemble stories from leading Korean companies, such as Hyundai, LG, Shinsegae, and Lotte. These details also helped increase viewers’ immersion in the drama.

Meanwhile, “Reborn Rich” is set to end on December 25th with 16 episodes. Attention is focused on the fate of Sunyang Group without Jin Yang Chul and whether Jin Do Joon will be able to buy and take over Sunyang.
