SBS’ “Today’s Webtoon” Kim Se-jeong revealed “I felt Kim Se-jeong from On Ma-eum while reading the script”, raising curiosity about the background.
In SBS’ new Friday-Saturday drama “Today’s Webtoon” (written by Cho Ye-rang, Lee Jae-eun/directed by Jo Soo-won, Kim Young-hwan/planned by Studio S/produced by Binge Works, Studio N), Kim Se-jeong plays the role of On Ma-eum, a former judo athlete who struggles to adapt to her new job as webtoon editor after retiring as an athlete due to an injury. Kim Se-jeong said, “I originally like the word ‘dream’. I saw myself in Ma-eum as she runs towards her dream with passion and positive energy like me.”
In this way, the keyword “dream” naturally led Kim Se-jeong to “Today’s Webtoon”. Kim Se-jeong, who expressed her belief “A dream come true is shining. However, protecting it or not achieving it are all precious dreams”, explained why she chose “Today’s Webtoon”, “This work contains not only the bright side of dreams, but also all the realistic processes that are dark and not glamorous. I thought it’d be interesting to deal with such a story from the perspective of Ma-eum and Kim Se-jeong, who are bright and positive.”
Therefore, Kim Se-jeong introduced the character “On Ma-eum” with interesting keywords such as “reckless” and “bemusedly“.
Ma-eum goes through a “reckless” process, from giving up her lifelong dream of judo, overcoming the tough competition to becoming a rookie contract employee of the webtoon editorial department. Nevertheless, she is a cute “growing character” who continues to grow “bemusedly“. Kim Se-jeong’s expression alone depicts how positive and adorable Ma-eum is in her mind.
Kim Se-jeong first made a big change in her styling to play this character. She challenged straight short hair to best reveal the fresh image of a new employee. She delivered a realistic review, “Thanks to this, I feel again how difficult it is to manage short hair.”
Above all, research on jobs was an important process. Kim Se-jeong said, “I asked for advice from a real judo athlete, met a webtoon editor and talked about various things.”
Kim Se-jeong added, “I’ve always enjoyed webtoons. As the number of works based on webtoons has increased recently, I thought, ‘I want to play the main character.'” However, while filming “Today’s Webtoon”, she saw a slightly different side. She confessed, “I learned the process of creating a webtoon. So now, behind the story, the hard work of writers and editors to keep the deadline every week has caught my eye. Please watch the growth story of Ma-eum, who heads towards her dream in the real world of the webtoon industry.”
Meanwhile, “Today’s Webtoon” depicts the dynamic office life of the webtoon industry and the growth of a freshman webtoon editor who used to be a judo athlete. Directed by director Jo Soo-won of “I Can Hear Your Voice”, “Pinocchio” and “Still 17”, it is drawing attention as an anticipated work that continues the success tradition of SBS’ Friday-Saturday dramas.
