BTS Copied SHINee? Past Accusations Re-emerged Amid Controversies

As controversies regarding HYBE, ADOR, and BTS continue, past allegations are being brought up against BTS.

Recently, as the HYBE-ADOR feud becomes the talk of the town in Korea, past allegations regarding HYBE groups – including BTS, have been re-emerging. In particular, BTS was accused of “sajaegi” (chart manipulation) as well as copying SHINee’s concept in the past.

Claims of BTS copying SHINee actually dates back to as far as the group’s “HYYH” (The Most Beautiful Moment in Life) era back in 2015 and 2016.

According to netizens, the camp-themed imagery and concept, as well as the signature rainbow hot-air balloon image used by BTS, bear strong resemblances to SHINee’s Japanese single “Lucky Star”, which was released in 2014.

Certain images from the two also show visual similarities, and some accessories and clothes worn by BTS members are also compared to SHINee.

In fact, a topic about these accusations has been published on the Korean forum “theqoo” and drawn attention. Below are some comments from netizens:

  • SHINee fans must have felt really frustrated at the time
  • I feel really upset thinking about how this issue ended up being buried. How frustrating must it have been for SHINee’s fans?
  • This is embarrassing to see
  • Since BTS was popular, everyone turned a blind eye to these issues
  • HYBE has been copying like a pro since day 1
