Ponytails and pigtails make a lot of Kpop idols look gorgeous. However, on the stage, they may become dangerous.
In different performances, Kpop idols often try out different styling, particularly different hairstyles. However, they tend to avoid pigtails, ponytails, or styles where they have to put their hair up.
For starters, like bleaching, putting one’s hair up in high ponytails can severely hurt the skin on the head.
This was previously discussed by 2 CLC members Sorn and Seungyeon, who said that they were “traumatized” from having to tie their hair tight so that it won’t fall out in the middle of the stage.
“I have to keep my hair up the entire day. To maintain the style, there are numerous pin keep my hair together”, Seungyeon said.
According to Sorn, other than having pins, stylists would use a lot of hair gel to keep things stable. Meanwhile, the idols have to restrict their head movements during hairstyle, and get their hair all dry and crumbling after a styling session.
If the hair is not well-fixed, it may come apart and become dangerous on stage. For groups such as NewJeans, they would wear all sorts of different hairstyles on the MVs and during events, but never while performing.
As a girl group whose strength lies in the choreography, GFRIEND often exude extremely high energy while on stage. However, when SinB wore a ponytail on stage, she had to hold back and be careful.
Alongside ponytails and pigtails, hair buns are also not favored on the stage. One time while performing “Knock Knock”, TWICE member Dahyun also struggled when her hair buns were on the verge of falling out. As the result, Dahyun had to re-tie her hair while dancing, earning a lot of brownie points for her professionalism
Nevertheless, some female Kpop idols still take the risk to wear these hairstyles since they fit the concept. In many cases, a high ponytail or pigtail makes an idol look fierce, strong, and chic, and if well-handled, can create some great effects.
