The first thing that will impress you when watching ‘Lost’ is the soundtrack that the film uses, which is the song Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, the version recorded by Jeff Buckley just before he decided to end his life twenty years ago.

There was a scene in the film that was very impressive when the characters in the movie learn that their friend has decided to end his life. And that friend also likes to listen to this song. With mourning over the loss, the song “Hallelujah” was played, bringing an indescribably sad feeling to the audience.

Kang Jae (Ryu Jun Yeol) asked Tak Yi (Yoo Soo Bin) the name of the song and why they listened to it. The director of the film was very subtle when using the song ‘Hallelujah’ to express the loss and grief of the characters in this conversation.

Kang Jae was a handsome playboy who lived on the generosity of rich ladies. This playboy always showed himself to be tough and not vulnerable. However, deep in his soul, Kang Jae was always haunted by loneliness.  Kang Jae lived such a boring life until his friend decided to end his life and this shock evoked vague fear in his heart.

On the way back from the funeral, Kang Jae met Boo Jung (Jeon Do Yeol) on the bus. Boo Jung was depressed and she had too many secrets to hide. At this time, she often sleepwalked and often cried on the bus. She couldn’t talk to her husband or father about the burdens that were weighing inside her hearts, but trying to deal with it alone made her feel like falling apart.

On an empty bus, Kang Jae saw Boo Jung crying.  Although the two were just strangers, Kang Jae – who was 13 years younger than Boo Jung – comforted her with a handkerchief. Perhaps at that moment, Kang Jae saw his own image in Boo Jung, both lonely and empty.

‘Lost’ owns beautiful, artistic frames which is not surprising with this advantage, because this is the first drama by director Hur Jin Ho. Before that, he has directed many movies such as ‘Forbidden Dream’, ‘The Last Princess’, ‘Five Senses of Eros’ and ‘April Snow’.

With ‘Lost’, director Hur made the audience felt like they were a companion on that deserted late-night bus and wanted to comfort both of Kang Jae and Boo Jung’s lonely souls.

One thing many viewers will agree with is that the cast of the movie did a great job of playing the role. Ryu Jun Yeol demonstrated his ingenious role-playing ability, he completely broke away from the image of his previous roles in ‘Reply 1988’, ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘Money’, ‘The King’ and ‘Believer’… to become Kang Jae.

The role in ‘Lost’ was probably a big challenge for the actor when he seemed both arrogant but still pitifully lonely. Many netizens believe that Ryu Jun Yeol deserves another Baeksang Arts Awards for this role.

Jeon Do Yeon – the outstanding actress at the 60th Cannes Film Festival – also gave a convincing performance. In ‘Lost’, she plays Boo Jung – a woman full of heartache on the bus. With her rich experience and natural acting, Jeon Do Yeon made the audience really empathize with Boo Jung.

Although ‘Lost’ is dark and heavy, it goes deep into portraying the inner character of the character honestly that touches the hearts of many audiences.
