The reason Netflix cannot relax even after “The Glory” made a big hit

Netflix is on a roll with “The Glory” in the new year of 2023. Will it continue this momentum with other releases this year?

Netflix’s original series “The Glory”, which was introduced on December 20th, 2022, is a success. In Korea, all the cast actors are enjoying their syndrome-like popularity and making hot topics every day. School bullying cases in drama and real life are being examined by the public one after another.

According to Good Data Corporation, “The Glory” has ranked 1st among OTT dramas/ series for two consecutive weeks. Its score increased sharply from 54% to 73.5%, which is nearly 10 times the result of No.2 TVing’s “Island”. Female lead Song Hye Kyo also topped the rankings for OTT casts. Meanwhile, many other actors in the drama, including Lim Ji Yeon, Lee Do Hyun, Park Sung Hoon, Kim Hieora, etc., also swept the top spots.

As a result, viewers are raising higher expectations for “The Glory” Part 2, which will premiere in March. In Korea, the public reaction to “The Glory” is nearly at the level of the 2021 hit drama “Squid Game”.

In 2022, Netflix introduced a total of 21 contents, including “All of Us Are Dead”, “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area”, “Juvenile Justice”, “Narco-Saints”, etc. Those works received favorable reviews and enthusiastic responses, but the overall performance of Netflix in that year was a little regrettable.

Therefore, Netflix is still in no position to be relaxed just with the success of “The Glory”. As it will showcase various new contents this year, dramas and films that can create sensations like “The Glory” must be released in order to help Netflix maintain its leading position in the OTT market.

Apart from “The Glory” Part 2, Netflix is planning to air Season 2 of various popular works, such as “Sweet Home” and “D.P.” In addition, it will unveil its splendid lineup with contents of diverse genres, such as Kim Woo Bin and Song Seung Hoon’s “Black Knight”, Yoo Ah In and Ahn Eun Jin’s “Goodbye Earth”, “Go Hyun Jung’s “Mask Girl”, Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee’s “Gyeongseong Creature”, Suzy’s “Doona!”, Kim Hee Ae and Moon So Ri’s “Queen Maker”, Choi Woo Sik and Son Seok Gu’s “Murder DIEary”, etc. Especially, “Gyeongseong Creature” and “Mask Girl” are among the most anticipated works in 2023.

Expectations and results might not be 100% the same. This is why attention is focused on whether Netflix, which is expected to fill 2023 with a great march of high-quality works, will continue the success of “The Glory” until the end of the year.
