The reason many stars think of retiring from showbiz despite receiving huge love from the public
Korean media discuss why celebrities considered the choice of retirement even during their heyday.
On the July 6th broadcast of “Dancing Queens on the Road”, BoA watched her past videos and confessed, “I didn’t know I would be a singer for this long”. She continued, “In our time, idol groups often disbanded when they reached 5 years. I thought I would not make it to five years”, adding, “I thought I would go to college, continue studying, and get married. In an old interview, I said my dream was to become a good wife”.
Opening up about her concerns regarding the life of a celebrity, BoA said, “At the age of 29, I felt something weird. As I turned 30, I thought more about what I should do as a female singer”, adding “The most difficult thing to me, as a female singer in her 30s, is seeing the people I used to work with no longer appearing on TV.”
In March, Kim Hye Soo also revealed her concern about retirement. Appearing on the Youtube channel “by PDC”, the actress mentioned retirement when talking about her acting career, saying “I felt so lonely and tired. It may sound funny and somehow exaggerated, but I also thought ‘I should stop here’. Even so, the audience will think, ‘She’s Kim Hye Soo, she can pull it off’. I’m not too harsh on myself but I must admit, it was lonely”.
Kim Hye Soo thought of retirement after watching the 2017 movie “Secret Sunshine”. She said, “I used to wonder why I always felt that I lack 20%, but now, I already reached the point where I thought, ‘What more can I do?’. My heart feels relieved and my mind has become more simple and clear”, adding “If I kept rejecting incoming projects, wouldn’t that be considered retirement? However, after a few months, I read ‘Default’ script and felt the excitement of acting again”.
Appearing on a Channel A program in June, Shinhwa Kim Dong Wan explained why he returned to his hometown and thought of retiring. He said, “Even if I’m not old, I’ve been a singer for such a long time. That’s why I feel tired”, adding “I had severe obsession and insomnia. But when I came to the countryside once, I could sleep very well. That’s why I returned to my hometown in Gapyeong.”
Lee Yeon Hee confessed that she experienced a great slump that she even thought of retiring after the work in 2018 ended. She said, “I thought my talent was not enough. After reflecting on myself, I realized that many people are still looking for me and trust me, so I continue doing this job”.
On a broadcast of “Master in the House” last year, Eun Ji Won shared, “Our job does not have a specific retirement age, so I thought a lot about when to quit doing this. It’s hard to find the perfect timing. To be honest, if things go well, I would have the desire to keep going. But isn’t it better to stop when I no longer have the power to be more creative”.
