“Queen of Tears” Revised Ending & Hong Hae-in Actually Died In 2034?

There are speculations that writer Park Ji-eun originally planned to end “Queen of Tears” with a sad ending

“Queen of Tears” ended on April 28th and recorded the highest rating of 24.9% in tvN history. Although the drama wrapped up with great achievements, various theories are pouring out as some viewers are not satisfied with the ending.

In the last episode, Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun) and Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won) promised to overcome any crisis together and spend the rest of their lives with each other. After showing the two walking with their daughter, the scene changed to Baek Hyun-woo getting old with gray hair touching Hong Hae-in’s grave. After that, Baek Hyun-woo and Hong Hae-in reunited in heaven with their young appearances.

Although it was a happy ending for the couple as they literally grew old and spent their entire lives together, some viewers still expressed regrets, such as “I can’t believe this is the ending of a sweet romantic comedy”, “I think ending the drama with the scene where they have a daughter is enough”, “Their last kiss scene was in episode 5. I wanted to see more happy moments of Hyun-woo and Hae-in”, etc.

Among heated discussions about “Queen of Tears” in online communities, the post titled “‘Queen of Tears’ originally had a sad ending”, drew particular attention.

According to the post, one possible ending was that Hyun-woo and their daughter mounted Hae-in in Germany. That’s why the production team only cast a child actress and there was no epilogue showing the daughter growing up.

In the actual epilogue, there were only photos of Hyun-woo and Hae-in’s daughter with their grandparents, not her parents. Pointing out that there were also no photos of Hyun-woo and Hae-in after they got old, the netizen who made the post explained, “They might have filmed two versions for the ending, and they selected the second ending in the last minute (2 weeks ago)”.

Another netizen even released a picture from a still cut showing Hong Hae-in’s grave with “31.10.2034”. They said, “I guess the year Hae-in was supposed to die in the drama was 2034 but they re-filmed the ending and changed it to 2074. Seems like ‘2034’ was originally planned to say she spent the remaining time happily”.

In response to this detail, some netizens commented, saying “Park Ji-eun’s previous drama ‘Crash Landing on You’ also had 2 ending versions”, “When I saw the pictures in the frame, I just wondered if the two got divorced again”, “After knowing the explanation for the first ending, I understand why Hae-in’s grave is in Germany”, etc.

Others also expressed different opinions, such as “A happy ending is still better than a sad ending”, “I think it would be more meaningful to go with the first plan, the sad ending”, “The drama is already over, nothing’s gonna change”, etc.
