Netflix fired employee who leaked Squid Game’s production cost

On October 15th (local time), NPR reported that Netflix fired an employee who leaked the production cost of 'Squid Game'.

A Netflix spokesman confirmed the dismissal and claimed that the employee leaked “confidential and commercially sensitive information” that eventually appeared in a Bloomberg article.

Squid Game is invested with a production cost of $21.4 million (25.3 billion won) with a duration of 9 episodes, and the production cost of Dave Chappelle‘s ‘The Closer‘ is $24.1 million (28.5 billion won). While ‘Squid Game‘ has become the most successful series on Netflix’s history, ‘The Closer‘ is suffering from internal troubles including controversy over Transphobia (hate – reject sex change and transgender).

The Closer’ is a stand-up comedy show led by popular broadcaster Dave Chappelle. Its jokes about transgender’s genitals are causing problems not only within the transgender community, but also within Netflix.

Earlier on October 11th (local time), the New York Times reported that three employees including one who wrote a critical SNS post about Dave Chappelle‘s ‘The Closer‘, which was released on Netflix on October 5th, had been suspended.

‘Squid Game’ is evaluated as “cost-effective” due to the leakage of the production cost information. The investment cost per episode of ‘Squid Game’ is estimated to be $2.38 million (2.8 billion won), which is less than $8 million (9.5 billion won) of Netflix’s famous content ‘Stranger Things’ and $10 million (11.9 billion won) of ‘The Crown’. However, the result was amazing.

Film media Collider commented, “Netflix invested a small amount of money in ‘Squid Game’ but eventually hit the jackpot. In an era where TV show costs are increasing due to the excessive competition in streaming services, ‘Squid Game’ was produced at a low production cost.”

‘Squid Game’ tells the story of those who participate in a mysterious survival game with a prize of 45.6 billion won, risking their lives to become the ultimate winner.
