(G)I-DLE Shuhua heavily criticized in China for “wishing death” on a fan

A recent response made by (G)I-DLE Shuhua to a fan on SNS is drawing negative attention in China due to being “too rude”.

On July 7th, the key words “Shuhua – I will burn some for you” started to trend at No.2 on the popular Chinese SNS platform Weibo.

As it turns out, Shuhua, a member of (G)I-DLE, is being criticized by Chinese netizens for making a “rude response” to a fan.

In particular, under an Instagram post of Shuhua, a fan jokingly left the comment of “Sister Shuhua, I have run out of money, can you lend me some” in Chinese, to which Shuhua replied, “I will burn some for you”.

It is known that in China and several other Asian nations, burning paper items and money is a custom often done for dead people. This is a gesture done by families and friends of the dead on special occasions, with the aim to “send” the burnt items to the other world.

As a result, Chinese netizens understood Shuhua’s comment as basically wishing death on her fan, and find it too rude for a joke.

Below are some comments from netizens on Weibo:

  • This can be somewhat acceptable between extremely close friends… But if my idol says that to me, I will be extremely sad. I don’t know how Shuhua’s fans feel about this, but it just seems too much for me.
  • You can’t just tell people you will burn money for them like this….
  • I understand that she is joking, but the joke this time is taking it too far
  • Is she saying that her fan is dead?? How is this funny??

On the other hand, Shuhua recently received criticism in Korea for allegedly being “disrespectful” and using informal language with the MC of web show “MMTG”.
