Celebrities are always exposed to the public but they still suffer damage from fraud. Why?
Kwon Min Ah shocked everyone when she recently revealed that she was scammed after working a part-time chatting job that guaranteed high profits. This kind of part-time chatting job lets women enter a chat room with men and have conversations, and they can receive money exchanged from the “gift” point given by their conversation partners.
Kwon Min Ah reportedly made 8 million won worth of points in a day and she asked the company to exchange money. However, the company demanded additional payment six times, causing Kwon Min Ah to suffer the loss of 15 million won six times. The company found out that she was an idol so they threatened her by sending photos of her legs to her conversation partners.
Not only Kwon Min Ah, but many celebrities have suffered damages due to fraud.
Most of the frauds targeting celebrities were done by taking advantage of their trust. Koyote Bbaek Ga once revealed that he invested in stocks at the recommendation of a close acquaintance who told him that he would make big profits from real estate investment when Gimpo is developed but lost contact with that acquaintance after selling three houses. Heo Kyung Hwan also confessed that his business partner siphoned off 2.7 billion won.
BLACKPINK Lisa was scammed by her former manager. The amount of fraud damage Lisa suffered in 2022 was around 1 billion won. The female singer said, “I entrusted him with the money to help me find real estate to invest in but couldn’t contact him after then.”
There is also a type of fraud aiming at deceiving aspiring child actors and idol singers. On a broadcast in the past, IU said, “All the companies that ask for money are all frauds. I got scammed at three places. They often ask us to pay 3 million won.”
In this regard, a cultural critic said, “In the case of famous people, the public pays great attention to them. Controversies are likely to break out if they get involved in a problem or do any little wrongdoing. That’s why most of them try not to come forward themselves”, adding “There have been many cases in which celebrities entrust their acquaintances with important things and get scammed”.
