Disney casts a black singer as Belle in “Beauty and the Beast”

After the live action of “The Little Mermaid”, Disney has casted a black singer for the role of female lead Belle in “Beauty and the Beast”.

On December 7th, the world-renowned R&B singer H.E.R (real name Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson) drew fans’ attention by revealing a poster for ABC and Disney+ “Beauty and the Beast Special” on her SNS.

In the published poster, H.E.R has transformed into Belle, the main character of “Beauty and the Beast”. However, unlike Belle, who is known for her yellow princess gown, H.E.R showed off her confident nature while dressed in a yellow suit.

Accordingly, H.E.R will be featured in a special broadcast to commemorate the 30th anniversary of “Beauty and the Beast”, which will be released on channel ABC in the United States on December 15th. The program will also be streamed on Disney’s OTT platform Disney+ on December 16th.

Back in March 2017, Disney produced a live-action film called “Beauty and the Beast” starring Hollywood actress Emma Watson.

Previously, Disney cast black actress Halle Bailey as the main character for the live-action movie of “The Little Mermaid”. This casting choice ended up being a topic of controversy, with some welcoming the diversity and opportunity for black actors, and some expressing concerns that such a decision will “damage” the original work.
