Red Velvet’s Joy confirmed to become the female lead for new KakaoTV drama alongside actor Choo Young Woo

Red Velvet’s Joy, whose real name is Park Soo Young, was cast in KakaoTV’s original project “Accidental Country Diary”.

On May 26th, Kakao Entertainment announced that it has decided to cast Park Soo Young (real name of Red Velvet’s Joy), as Ahn Ja Young, the female lead of their upcoming original series “A Country Diary”. Her character will be a local policewoman in a rural village in Kangchon.

“A Country Diary” will be a romance comedy that revolves around the native Seoul veterinarian Han Ji Yul (played by Choo Young Woo), who suddenly moves to Heedong-ri, a rural village in Kangchon. The series is based on the popular webtoon “Accidental Country Diary”, and is a healing love story between the two main characters, who soothe each other’s pain in the warm atmosphere of the countryside.

Through “A Country Diary”, audiences can expect to see the green nature in full swing, along with the joys and sorrows of pure and kind village people. The series will be directed by Kwon Seok Jang, who previously headed the production of hit K-dramas like “Bossam: Steal the Fate”, “Miss Korea”, and “Pasta”. Filming will begin in the first half of 2022, and broadcast will start on KakaoTV within the year.

Joy’s character, the policewoman Ahn Jae Young, is the self-proclaimed “best person in Heedong-ri” with excellent social skills. She is loved by all fellow villagers, and offers her hands to everyone. Whenever a quarrel occurs in the neighborhood, Jae Young will intervene and help people make up again.  This character is a nice contrast to the male lead Ji Yul, who is uninterested in other people and dislikes attention.

Park Soo Young, or Red Velvet’s Joy, is gradually accumulating her filmography as an actress, and will radiate her bright energy through this new work. Since her acting debut in “The Liar and His Lover”, the idol-actress has steadily expanded her acting spectrum by experimenting with different genres, with female lead roles in “Tempted” and “Only One Person”. In the latter, she played the role of Seong Mi Do, a famous influencer who looked gorgeous on the outside, but felt empty on the inside. Her psychological acting and intricate delivery of emotions has truly shined through this work.

“A Country Diary” will be Joy’s first collaboration with Choo Young Woo, who will take up the role of the male lead. Through this work, viewers can expect a bright and positive Joy via a love story between two opposite people, and experience giddy and warm feelings. Talking about her newest casting, the idol-actress said: “It is an honor to be able to work with Director Kwon Seok-jang, whom I have always respected. Like the title of the drama, I hope that this series will be an accidental shelter that gives comfort to the viewers. I will do my best to express Ja Young well.”

“A Country Diary” will be a mid-form drama with a total of 12 episodes, with each lasting 30 minutes. It is scheduled to air in the second half of 2022.

Previously, SNSD’s Soo Young and Jang Geun Suk were offered to star in the drama but have since rejected.
