Itaewon Disaster Victim Lee Ji-han’s Mother Left Heartfelt Letter To Her Son

Mother of the late Lee Ji-han, who died in the Itaewon disaster last year, wrote a letter to her son

On October 29th, Lee Ji-han’s mother posted several photos and a long letter on her son’s Instagram. The post includes photos taken from when Lee Ji-han was a child until he became an actor.

In the caption, Lee Ji-han’s mother said, “My son Ji-han, whom I can’t exchange for anything in the world. It’s mom here. It’s been a year since I last saw you. I can still see your face so clear as if I just met you two days ago”.

She continued, “You weren’t there on your birthday two months ago. It’s been a year, and you’re still not here”, adding “I can still see your appearance very vividly, but there’s something I can’t remember no matter how much I try to think about it. That’s your beautiful eyes”.

Expressing her painful heart, Lee Ji-han’s mother shared, “No matter how hard I try, I can’t still remember your clear eyes. Mom has been struggling with different despair these days”.

She also mentioned the story of the Itaewon disaster that occurred a year ago. She said, “How scary and painful the suffocating atmosphere in that Itaewon was”, adding “I’m sorry, Ji-han ah. It was mom’s fault. Mom and Dad should have rushed to Itaewon to save you. I can’t stop feeling guilty. If I had run to your place that day, you wouldn’t have been left on that cold road without rescue and gone to heaven”.

She went on saying, “Mom really hates this government. ‘Help me! I think I’m going to be crushed to death!’. Those beasts turned away even after hearing your screams very clearly”, adding “They could have saved everyone, but why? Why didn’t the government prepare for such an unexpected disaster? Even if I close my eyes and think about it every day, I can’t understand it. My anger grows as much as the days I haven’t seen you”.

She added, “Mom made a pledge again today. I’m trying to search for every way to make sure that your death doesn’t go in vain”, adding “This sad mom will continue visiting you every day with white rice that I had never given you and sweet fruit that you liked”.

Lastly, she said, “Ji-han ah, it turns out that I really missed your clear and kindhearted eyes. Mom must have loved you so much. I’ll keep muttering ‘I love you’ until I can close my eyes. I’ll see you a little later”, expressing her unwavering love for her son.

Meanwhile, Lee Ji-han made his face known to the public after appearing in Season 2 of Mnet’s survival program “Produce 101” in 2017. He later turned to acting and debuted in a 2019 web drama. He passed away in the middle of the filming of MBC’s series “Kokdu: Season of Deity”.
