Actress Han Hyo-joo shared candid stories to mark the end of “Happiness”.
tvN’s Friday-Saturday drama “Happiness” (directed by Ahn Gil-ho, written by Han Sang-woon) deals with the psychology and reality of residents who are desperate to survive in a blocked apartment in the new normal era where infectious diseases have become commonplace. It ended after the December 11 broadcast.
Han Hyo-joo played the role of Yoon Sae-bom, who became a ray of light in the apartment with her quick situational judgment and boldness. She was praised for not only leading viewers to empathize by keeping her balance among the characters who are united with selfishness, but also enhancing the work’s immersion with her cool actions.
On December 12, Han Hyo-joo, who proved the aspect of an irreplaceable actress like this, shared sincere stories through her agency in commemoration of the end of “Happiness”.
Following is Han Hyo-joo’s interview.
- “Happiness” ended with favorable reviews as a well-made drama in which the harmony between the director, the writer and the cast was perfect. How do you feel?
“It is an honor. I was lucky to meet a good team and a good character. I really enjoyed acting, and I thought ‘Happiness’ contained a more realistic story than I thought. Looking at the work, I constantly asked ‘If this situation were real, what choice would I make? Would I be able to make a just choice like Sae-bom?’ ‘Happiness’ is a drama that makes you think a lot in many ways.”
- Was there any part that needed to focus on character analysis after you received a proposal for playing Yoon Sae-bom, an independent character with quick situational judgment and determination?
“When I saw Yoon Sae-bom, the first thing that came to my mind was that she had many similarities to me. However, as Yoon Sae-bom is a righteous person who takes the lead, I thought that Sae-bom’s actions should be valid and persuasive so that viewers can sympathize with her. So, at the beginning of the filming process, I spent time asking the director if Sae-bom’s appearance and behaviors were acceptable.”
- Yoon Sae-bom’s fashion and hairstyle, which are comfortable and practical in activities, were also a hot topic. Was there any styling that you worked hard on to embody Yoon Sae-bom?
“Actually, I usually wear training clothes, so I wore sweatsuits when I went to the set. (Laugh) As Sae-bom’s fashion style is something that happens in a blocked apartment, I stuck to tracksuits because I wanted to give Sae-bom a feeling of wearing outfits that were comfortable and unprepared right away from her closet.”
“I wanted to show a change in the situation by tying or loosening my hairstyle, but depending on the shooting situation or connection to the scene, there were many cases where this was impossible.”
- Did you watch “Happiness” live? What was the most memorable response from viewers?
“I tried to watch it in real time. Viewers gave a lot of funny reactions saying that the apartment villains were so hateful, but the scene where Sae-bom kicked Oh Joo-hyung (Baek Hyun-jin) was great. Therefore, I could watch the broadcast more immersed in viewers’ point of view.”

“Hi Sae-bom, who has been living with me for 4 months. I have so many happy memories of meeting you. Please fill your future with only happy things. Thank you.”
