Chinese netizens flood “Narco-Saints” with criticism, saying Taiwanese actor Chang Chen damaged the image of China

Taiwanese Media reported on September 25 that Chinese netizens are criticizing Taiwanese actor Chang Chen, who appeared in Netflix’s “Narco-Saints”.

Netflix’s original series “Narco-Saints” is gaining great popularity across Asia, ranking first on Netflix in Taiwan as well as in Korea. The appearance of Taiwanese actor Chang Chen also contributed to the popularity of “Narco-Saints” in Taiwan. In “Narco-Saints”, Chang Chen left a strong impression by playing Chen Jin, a Chinese gang leader that is active in Suriname.

However, following the release of “Narco-Saints”, Chang Chen has come under fire in China. This is because, in the series, the actor appears as a Chinese drug criminal with tattoos all over his body, long hair, and wearing a colorful shirt. Watching this, some Chinese netizens felt offended and expressed their anger, saying, “It undermines the image of Chinese people.”

Hong Kong media Yahoo also reported Chinese netizens’ reactions to “Narco-Saints”, such as, “Can’t Korea make a drama without cursing China?” and “I’ve never seen a Chinese person play a good character in a Korean drama.”

However, according to Mirror Media, a Taiwanese media channel, Taiwanese viewers argued, “Chang Chen is Taiwanese.

Meanwhile, “Narco-Saints” was released exclusively on Netflix worldwide on September 9, and no official streaming service is provided in China.
