Divided Opinions Over BLACKPINK Lisa’s Tattoo Reveal: Thai Netizens React Negatively?

BLACKPINK’s Lisa is embroiled in a controversy in Thailand over her latest photoshoot where she revealed her small tattoo.

On March 7, Thai news outlets Thairath and Sanook reported that BLACKPINK Lisa’s recent pictorial for fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar was causing controversy in Thailand. While the photoshoot was released at the beginning of March, it has been a topic of debate for the past few days in Lisa’s home country.

On the cover, Lisa is seen wearing a sleeveless top and striking sexy poses. The female idol also revealed a small tattoo on her lower back, near her waist. According to Thairath, this is the reason for the controversy.

The debate started with a post on Twitter that questioned why Lisa would get a tattoo, explaining that Thai people have a negative view of tattoos, even if they have positive meanings. The original poster went on to say that older people in Thailand do not like tattoos, and that having them could even hinder employment. OP added that it is better if Lisa could be an idol and a role model to people of different ages and genders.

Many Thai netizens have agreed with this sentiment. However, Lisa’s fans have defended the idol, stating that having a tattoo is an individual right and not something that should be debated. They also pointed out that Lisa makes hundreds of millions of baht per month and does not need to worry about employment issues.

“It’s her body. Her money. Why do you care about what she wants to do?” one fan said. “It’s funny. What era are we in now? It seems like we can’t keep up with the world. She’s already so rich, and the most important thing is not to interfere with other people’s bodies. It’s her life, and she has the right to do whatever she wants,” said another fan, as reported by Thairath.

Multiple big fan pages in Thailand have shared the tweet about Lisa’s tattoo, with some posts receiving up to 140,000 comments.

Meanwhile, in South Korea, Lisa’s photoshoot has been praised, and her tattoo has not caused controversy since it is relatively small and in a hard-to-see place.

Korea Times has previously reported on the growing popularity of tattoos among young people, especially among Korean celebrities who are increasingly flaunting their tattoos with confidence. Despite previous negative stereotypes, more and more K-pop stars, such as BTS’s Jung Kook, Jay Park, WINNER’s Mino, and HyunA, are showing off their various tattoos.
