The 7th episode of tvN’s drama “The Queen’s Umbrella”, which aired on November 5th, showed Queen Dowager (Kim Hae Sook) threatening to depose Queen Hwa Ryeong (Kim Hye Soo) if the King (Choi Won Young) does not give her his consent to choose the heir to the throne.

Netizens who watched episode 7 commented, “Kim Hye Soo did a drama after a long time. The story is okay, but I wish the production team prepared it better”, “Although it’s just a fictional story, the background of the drama is still Joseon”, “I enjoy the drama but some scenes make me feel annoying”, “It’s more comfortable to think of it as a bad drama in Joseon version”, etc.

On the other hand, other Internet users responded that they did not find any problem, saying “I think you would like it if you think of it as a normal constitutional monarchy”, “‘The Queen’s Umbrella’ is interesting”, “They said it from the beginning that this is a fantasy comic historical drama”, etc.

“The Queen’s Umbrella” is a drama based on the royal education law of the Joseon Dynasty. Actress Kim Hye Soo plays Queen Im Hwa Ryeon, who has to train and make her troublemaker princes into the Crown Prince. “The Queen’s Umbrella” drew keen attention from the public even before its official broadcast as Kim Hye Soo’s first comeback historical drama in 20 years.

However, the issue of historical evidence has been pointed out after the drama was broadcast. Earlier in the second episode of “The Queen’s Umbrella”, which aired on the 16th of last month, the word “Mul-gwi-won-ju”, which means “Things return to their original owners”, came out as a subtitle line. However, the production team got caught using the Chinese notation “物归原主” instead of its Chinese characters in Korean “物歸原主”. Later, “The Queen’s Umbrella” side has to revise the notation of “Mul-gwi-won-ju” to “物歸原主”.

In addition, the scene where Queen Hwa Ryeong comes to the King’s bed was said to be controversial because a plaque hanging on the King’s bed was found to use the name “Taehwajeon”.

“Taehwajeon” was the name of the Forbidden City hall during the Qing Dynasty, and was identified as a name that had never been used in Joseon. Therefore, viewers pointed it out as a historical error in the drama.

Historian Jeon Woo Yoong said on the 27th of last month, “There is no way that these things could happen in a Joseon royal family. The content was not ‘fictional’ but ‘delusional’”, adding “China was originally a society based on Neo-Confucianism, but eight princes had argued over the throne since the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. This detail is similar to the setting of ‘The Queen’s Umbrella’”.

Historian Kim Jae Won also added, “In my position, I encourage the making of content to express as many historical materials as it can. Even so, it seems like the work has paid no respect for history by presenting things that are far from the context of the times”.
