Actress Tang Wei revealed that she made extraordinary efforts for “Decision to Leave”.
On May 24th (local time), a round interview with Korean reporters for the movie “Decision to Leave” (directed by Park Chan-wook) was held in Cannes, France, where the 75th Cannes International Film Festival is in progress. Director Park Chan-wook, Park Hae-il and Tang Wei each met and talked with Korean reporters.
“Decision to Leave“, which was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of Hae-jun (Park Hae-il), a detective who is investigating a case of unnatural death in the mountain, meeting Seo-rae (Tang Wei), the wife of the deceased, and feeling suspicious and interested at the same time. On May 23rd, it was unveiled through the world premiere.
On this day, Tang Wei expressed her feelings after the official showing, “I watched the movie (through the world premiere) three times. It’s my first time watching it on a big screen. The sound effect was so good. I’ve watched it twice before, but the director told me, ‘Watch it in the theater then evaluate this work.’ Now I know why he said so.”
Tang Wei is strongly mentioned as a candidate for the Best Actress Award by leading the work as the main character Seo-rae. Regarding this, Tang Wei replied cautiously, “Yesterday, our writer said, ‘I wanted to receive an award for anything with this movie before I came here, but I think I got an award after watching the movie.’ I’ll answer with those words instead.”
She added, “And what’s even better is that I heard yesterday that ‘Decision to Leave’ was chosen as the movie enjoyed by those nominated for the Caméra d’or at the film festival. I think it was an honorable recognition.” In fact, Lee Jung-jae and other rookie directors, who were nominated for the Caméra d’or, watched the world premiere of “Decision to Leave” together.
The story of her Korean acting was also indispensable. Tang Wei digests most of her lines in “Decision to Leave” in Korean. She heard and memorized lines herself, but she studied and understood all the meanings of the words.
Tang Wei explained why she devoted herself to studying Korean, “I understood the meanings of the words because they were translated into Chinese. I learned all the meanings when words are attached and when they are written off. Some words had really deep meanings, so I learned them separately. I thought that none of the letters in the movie should be passed by. Therefore I studied all of them.”
She drew attention by confessing, “There were a lot of fun things. Sometimes I didn’t understand and I was like, ‘Is this correct?’ Sometimes I was so angry at the filming site that I even tapped a pencil on the desk like this and wondered, ‘Why am I saying this?’ I thought that even if I get one word wrong, my character could collapse.”
Meanwhile, “Decision to Leave” is scheduled to be released in Korea on June 29th.
