“Squid Game” nominated in 13 categories for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards

Netflix series “Squid Game” became the first non-English-speaking work to be nominated for Best Drama at the Primetime Emmy Awards. 

Netflix K-drama “Squid Game”, which became a phenomenon all across the world, has received a total of 14 nominations in 13 categories, including Best Drama at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. 

The series revolves around desperate people who participated in a mysterious survival game in order to win $4.56 million, at the cost of their lives. 

“Squid Game” was nominated for Best Drama Series, while its director, Hwang Dong Hyuk, became the first Korean to receive a nomination for Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Regarding the honor, Hwang Dong Hyuk said: “I am very happy and honored that ‘Squid Game’ is the first non-English-speaking drama to be nominated for an Emmy Award. I hope that ‘Squid Game’’s Emmy nomination will open the door to opportunities for the world to enjoy and understand each other’s content, transcending language and cultural barriers.

Actor Lee Jung Jae, who was the first Asian to be nominated for the Best Actor Award in a Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy, said: “First of all, thank you very much. It is such an honor to be nominated alongside great actors. I will share this joy with fans from all around the world who continue to give ‘Squid Game’ a lot of love, and the ‘Squid Game’ team, who worked hard together.

In addition, actors Park Hae Soo and Oh Young Soo were named side by side on the nominations for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Meanwhile, model-actress Jung Ho Yeon became the first Koreans to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and actress Lee Yoo Mi was nominated for Guest Actress in a Drama Series

In production-related categories, “Squid Game” was the first non-English-speaking work to be nominated in large numbers, proving how it’s well-recognized for directing, acting, script, as well as production. Particular nominations include: Best Cinematography for a Single Camera Series (1 hour) (Lee Hyung Duk), Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music (Jeong Jae Il), Production Design For A Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour Or More) (over 1 hour) (Chae Kyung Sun et al.). It was also named Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series (Nam Na Young), Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Single Episode (Jung Jae Hoon et al.), and Outstanding Stunt Performance (Lim Tae Hoon et al.) in the single episode category. The awards in this field will be announced at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which will be held prior to the Emmy Awards.

Previously, the Netflix series “Squid Game” has attracted attention by winning Best Supporting Actor (Oh Young Soo) at the 79th Golden Globe; Best Actor in a Drama Series (Lee Jung Jae), Best Actress in a Drama Series (Jung Ho Yeon), and Outstanding Action Performance as a Stunt Ensemble at the 28th American Actors Guild Awards; as well as Best Foreign Language Series and Best Actor in a Drama Series (Lee Jung Jae) at the 27th Critics Choice Award. The series also swept through the 2022 Baeksang Arts Awards with wins in various categories including the Daesang – the highest honor of the night, garnering numerous discussion and becoming a hot topic. 

With the latest nominations, “Squid Game” has become the first non-English-speaking series and the first Asian production to be nominated for multiple awards and categories at the Primetime Emmy, confirming its long-last popularity. 

“Squid Game” remains the undisputed No. 1 in Netflix non-English TV category, recording 1.65045 billion hours of cumulative viewing within 28 days after its release. The 6th episode of the series was also praised to be one of the best in 2021 by Forbes, proving Korean creators’ ability to compete with Hollywood, which is mostly centered on the U.S, according to Bloomberg.

The sensational web drama also popularized Korean childhood games such as “Red Light Green Light” and “Dalgona candy”, as well as other in-series items like green sweatshirts, masks with circles, triangles, and squares, creating a cultural craze that transcends beyond  language barriers. 

With all its achievement, “Squid Game” has established itself as one of the most popular Netflix series in history, and has been confirmed for a 2nd season. The results of Squid Game’s nominations at the Primetime Emmy will be revealed at the award ceremonies, which are scheduled on September 3rd and 4th (Creative Arts Emmy Awards), and September 12th (main event), in local time.
