IU “My ears have been weird since a year ago… Sounds are unclear”

IU transformed into the main character in a fairy tale.

On Oct 20th, Vogue Korea released IU‘s pictorial cuts.

In the pictorial, IU showed various fashions and poses with the background reminiscent of a fairy tale. In a room full of picture frames, IU is looking down while wearing a big hat. In another cut, she is leaning against the wall in a black long dress. IU, who boasts her princess-like visuals, is staring at the camera with dreamy eyes.

In an interview after filming, when asked “What was the biggest hurdle for this solo concert, and how did you overcome it? On the contrary, what was the most exciting part?”, IU replied, “The biggest hurdle was myself. Since a year ago, my ears have been giving me some issues. If I sweat a lot or make loud sounds for a long time, the muscles inside my ears will rattle and open, and sound seems to echo loudly inside. Although I trained well and improved greatly while preparing for the concert, many complicated thoughts were running through my mind as it had been a while since I stood on stage and it was the biggest stage in my singing career. I just kept practicing. When my ears opened, sounds became unclear to me, so I was cautious about singing loudly and afraid to do so. Even if it sounded weird to me, I’d just sing it out loud first, record, listen to it again and find a way to control it. As I kept doing that, I regained my confidence little by little. If I overdo it, it may get worse depending on my condition, but now it seems to be in a stable area.”

IU recently confessed that she is suffering from “Patulous Eustachian Tube”.

After the diagnosis, IU said, “After receiving the diagnosis, I thought it was a relief that it wasn’t a problem with my hearing itself. Since my job requires me to use my voice a lot, although I didn’t know what to do, I think it was a chance for me to have more humble feelings about my health and this job that I love. I try not to ever forget the grateful feeling I felt when I finished the concert safely without any of the worst case scenarios I imagined. After the articles were published, I was contacted by many people. I also got text messages from seniors that I didn’t have their contact information. There were more people around me suffering from this symptom than I thought. As we use our ears and throat a lot, many singers revealed that they faced the same issue and shared their encouragement and their own tips with me. I also gave all the information I could give to those who asked for help. As a person who stands on stage, I felt reassured that I’d be able to recover quickly just by sharing empathy and support. This is an episode that I was overwhelmed with love for mankind recently.”
