ILLIT Accused of Copying EXO, Adds to Plagiarism Controversy

From copying NewJeans to “stealing” fandom name, ILLIT’s “plagiarism controversy” intensifies with a new accusation.

Ever since debut, it seems that girl group ILLIT has been shrouded in a “plagiarism controversy”.

Particularly, they were accused of copying NewJeans’ concept as well as having similar choreography to NewJeans and LE SSERAFIM upon debut. Then, as the girl group announced the fandom name “LILLY”, they faced criticism of the name being too similar to NMIXX’s Lily and bearing a strong resemblance with “LILLIES” – the unofficial name of BLACKPINK’s Lisa’s Fan.

In fact, the ILLIT-NewJeans copying issue was so serious, it became the reason behind the ongoing HYBE-ADOR feud.

Recently, however, it seems that ILLIT is facing yet another plagiarism controversy.

To specify, after ILLIT’s Inkigayo performance on April 21, the group shared photos on SNS platform X. One of the three showed the group doing an L hand sign, presumably referencing the double Ls in their group name.

However, the “L” hand sign has been known to be used by EXO for a long time to represent the group’s fandom – EXO-L.

As a result, the photo where all ILLIT member did the hand sign irked a lot of EXO fans, who accused ILLIT of “copying” the “L” hand symbol from EXO.

“A group based on plagiarism”, a fan even described ILLIT using a harsh tone.
