SEVENTEEN Receives Mixed Reactions for AI Use in “Maestro” Teaser

The MV teaser for SEVENTEEN’s new title track, “Maestro”, incorporated the use of AI, sparking mixed reactions.

On April 25, SEVENTEEN unveiled the teaser for the MV of their upcoming title track “Maestro”, which stuns fans with a dark concept completely opposite to the group’s last comeback with “God of Music”.

From the narration and visuals of the video, fans garnered that the “Maestro” MV will comment on the use of AI technology in art, showing a “battle” of SEVENTEEN and AI.

However, a disclaimer in the video sparked controversies, as it revealed that a portion of the footage used in the “Maestro” Teaser was created using AI.

Particularly, it is known that AI use has been heavily criticized in art spaces due to the technology taking artworks without consent for its “training process”.

Therefore, SEVENTEEN’s use of AI despite criticizing the technology is deemed “hypocritical” by many, as the group’s agency could have hired VFX artists to “replicate” AI arts. Meanwhile, many fans also express hope that this AI use only includes the production house’s own database so no human artists get “stolen” from it.

At the same time, some fans are defending the group, stating that using AI is inevitable to portray how such technology cannot create “real arts” like humans.

On the other hand, RIIZE also recently got criticized for using AI in their “visualizer” content.
