Netizens’ reactions to BLACKPINK’s new title track “Shut Down”

“Shut Down” is receiving positive feedback while the other album songs are making their way up digital charts.

After the buzzing release of their pre-release single ”Pink Venom”, on September 16th at 1 PM (KST), BLACKPINK officially released their second full album “BORN PINK” featuring the title track “Shut Down”. The song is said to express a brand new side of the group and stepped away from the EDM and hip-hop feels of “PINK VENOM”.

“Shut Down” MV – BLACKPINK

“Shut Down” was produced by Teddy and 24. It samples the classical piece “La Campanella” by Niccolò Paganini. The song starts with a sophisticated violin melody, combining with brass hip-hop feels to produce a diverse mix that highlights BLACKPINK’s colors. Unlike their previous tracks, “Shut Down” emits confidence with a blend of mystery, conveying in full the spirit of BLACKPINK.

As usual, BLACKPINK’s MV was dotted with high-end outfits and meticulous settings. The MV for ”Shut Down” was also a nostalgic call-back to their previous MVs. The members recreated the famous scenes under a spectacle as a metaphor of shooting down their older versions to become better selves, a “new BLACKPINK” that is more well-rounded and powerful.

“Shut Down” quickly took social media by storm upon its release. With high-quality music and a homage to past BLACKPINK’s hits, netizens are loving this comeback. Their b-sides have also received positive reviews.

Several comments from netizens:

– Has anyone listened to the full album, then turned back to listen to “Shut Down” and cried like me. This feels like BLACKPINK. It gives an emotional but powerful feeling upon listening.

– I was not wrong looking forward to it. It’s so good, the vibes were bright and dynamic, I felt so energized.

– Among the B-sides, my pick is “Typa Girl”.

– The music was gentle, a little playful similar to when capturing the best moments during activities, but still a lingering sense of sadness.

– The scenes in the MV were recreated according to the previous MVs. Fortunately, this song was not too noisy. Jisoo‘s voice suited this song so well.

– This song is good, it sounds better than “PINK VENOM”. Jisoo’s voice is better than the previous songs. The last part is so mesmerizing. Lisa killed it, the intro was so impressive.

After more than an hour after its release, “Shut Down” MV reached 7 million views on YouTube and other songs in “BORN PINK” are climbing up the digital charts.
