NewJeans criticized for using iPhone in their MV by netizens in their 40s

Girl group NewJeans is facing criticisms from netizens in their 40s for using the iPhone 14 Pro in their MV.

On July 21st, Apple started its new “Shot on iPhone” campaign through NewJeans‘ MV for their latest song “ETA.”

As part of this campaign, NewJeans used the iPhone 14 Pro to film their MV for “ETA”. In particular, the girl group captured dance sequences using the phone’s “Action Mode” and implemented a cinematic look with the “Cinematic Mode”. They also emphasized the iPhone’s other camera capabilities through action such as utilizing the FaceTime feature.

However, some netizens expressed disappointment by flooding the comments section with remarks like, “Which country’s advertisement is this? I’m disappointed that they’re doing an Apple ad despite being a Korean group”, “A bit disappointed in NewJeans”, and “They don’t seem to have a positive influence.”

In addition, some netizens even left harsh comments such as ”They seem to have no patriotism; they should think about the way they are living” and “From now on, I’ll avoid NewJeans for sure.”

Meanwhile, Jang Won Young also received criticism from netizens back on July 26th, when she shared photos using her iPhone at the Samsung Galaxy unveiling event.

According to an analysis of the comments on various platforms, however, it was revealed that netizens condemning NewJeans and Jang Won Young for using iPhones are mostly males in their 40s.

As a result, other netizens expressed anger by saying things such as, “An ad is just an ad; why do they have to receive hate for it”, “I understand the context of their anger, but we’re not living in the Joseon era”, “Then, should we not eat foreign food as well?”, and so on.

One netizen also emphasized, “Given that the age group criticizing them is the older generation, it seems that they have a tendency to associate national identity with mobile phones. However, malicious comments can never be justified.”

Meanwhile, NewJeans’ “ETA” MV, which is part of the “Shot on iPhone” campaign, is Apple’s first time producing a music video in cooperation with a Kpop artist.
