Lee Je-hoon Will Steal The Spotlight After “Queen of Tears” Ends

As "Queen of Tears" ends, attention is now turning to "Chief Detective 1958" and its lead actor, Lee Je-hoon.

Lee Je-hoon’s role in the MBC Friday-Saturday drama “Chief Detective 1958” has been drawing significant interest since the series’ first broadcast on April 19, which recorded a remarkable rating of 10.1% (Nielsen Korea, nationwide). This is the highest rating for a single episode of an MBC Friday-Saturday drama to date.

With a storyline that meets viewers’ high expectations, “Chief Detective 1958” continues to increase its ratings. In its third episode, broadcast on the 27th, it recorded an even higher rating of 10.8%. These numbers prove that the drama is resonating with the audience.

While consistently achieving over 10% ratings on Fridays, the issue lies with Saturdays. Due to the final episodes of the tvN weekend drama “Queen of Tears” consistently boosting the final ratings, “Chief Detective 1958” has experienced a decline in ratings on Saturdays.

In fact, the second episode of “Chief Detective 1958”, broadcast on the 20th, only achieved a rating of 7.8%, a 2.3% drop from the previous day. The fourth episode, broadcast on the 27th, also saw a decrease to 7.1%, down by 3.1% from the previous day.

Meanwhile, “Queen of Tears” has been breaking through 20% ratings continuously, reaching a peak of 24.8% for its final episode broadcast on the 28th, setting a new record for tvN.

With the end of “Queen of Tears,” leaving its Saturday time slot vacant, it is expected that “Chief Detective 1958” will continue to see an increase in ratings.

While there were concerns and expectations about remaking a masterpiece drama before its premiere, once the story was revealed, it received praise. Particularly, the portrayal of innocent and righteous detectives solving various colorful cases reflecting the era against the backdrop of 1958 has elevated the drama to become the Friday night ratings leader and is expected to continue dominating Saturday nights.

The historical background chosen by “Chief Detective 1958” also stimulates viewers’ curiosity. It is set in the late 1950s, close to the Japanese colonial era and not long after the Korean War, depicting the societal conditions of the time realistically while providing entertainment.

The powerful chemistry between Lee Je-hoon and Lee Dong-hwi, along with the gradually emerging charm of newcomers such as Choi Woo-sung and Yoon Hyun-soo, contributes to the popularity of the drama. Their teamwork unfolds dynamically, combined with the reliable support of actor Choi Deok-moon in the role of a pivotal character, raising expectations for future increases in ratings.

“Chief Detective 1958” is a reboot of the MBC drama “Chief Inspector,” which was popular in the 1970s and 1980s starring Choi Bool-am. It delves into the younger days of Captain Park Young-han, portrayed by Choi Bool-am in the original work, focusing on how the hero was born.
